LIVER PROFILE

Who is the liver profile for?

The profile is recommended for patients with a suspected liver malfunction.

The tests help to evaluate the liver for injury, infection, or inflammation by determining the level of certain liver enzymes (proteins) in the blood.

The profile includes the following tests: Bilirubin, Alk Phos, AST, ALT, gamma GT, total Protein, albumin, globulin

IT IS WORTH TO KNOW:

The liver is located in the right upper portion of the abdominal cavity just beneath the rib cage. The liver has many functions that are vital to life. Some of the important functions of the human liver are:

  • detoxification of blood
  • production of important clotting factors, albumin, and many other important proteins
  • metabolizing (processing) medications and nutrients
  • processing of waste products of haemoglobin and other cells
  • storing of vitamins, fat, cholesterol, and bile
  • production of glucose The symptoms of liver problems are varied. A very characteristic sign of liver malfunction is jaundice (yellow skin colour). Very often, however, liver diseases progress without any evident symptoms.

General symptoms of liver problems include:

  • dark urine or light-coloured stool
  • no desire to eat
  • Intolerance of greasy food
  • swelling or pain on the right upper side of the abdomen
  • throwing up or feeling like you might
  • weakness or feeling very tired
  • bad mood, depression

Some other signs that might indicate liver disease:

  • allergies
  • eczema
  • light hypersensitivity
  • diarrhoea
  • bitter taste in your mouth
  • dark, unhealthy looking skin
  • The most common causes of liver damage or disease are:
  • contagious diseases: hepatitis type A, B or C
  • improper diet
  • abuse of alcohol
  • some medicines
  • food poisoning
  • being overweight (especially if accompanied with diabetes and high blood pressure)
